Joss Whedon Quotes

First up, I have to tell you my original post was going to be Jim Jarmusch. I thought I was going to get to see his new movie tonight, Only Lovers Left Alive, starring Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston. Sadly enough for me, it is only premiering tonight in New York and LA. I will have to wait until later this month to see it, so Jim Jarmusch has been bumped and replaced by one of my favorite sources of writing quotes.

Joss Whedon is a geek god.

He gave the world Firefly and Buffy and my Fangirl favorite, Avengers.

But I dedicate this post to Joss’s fantastic quotes about writing and creating.

So, for your consideration, here are some of my favorites. I find him incredibly inspiring and hopefully you will as well.

Please share with me in the comments if I missed one of your favorites.

Or feel free to tell me what shows of his you love most. πŸ™‚ Feel free to bring on the Firefly love! ;). Or Avengers Fangirl with me – specifically Loki but I will enjoy all. Even Hawkeye though I think he barely counts as an Avenger. Haha.

“I write to give myself strength.
I write to be the characters I am not.
I write to explore all the things I am afraid of.
-Joss Whedon

Bottom line is, even if you see ’em coming, you’re not ready for
the big moments.
No one asks for their life to change, not really.
But it does.
So what are we?
Helpless? Puppets?
No, the big moments are gonna come. You can’t help that.
It’s what you do afterwards that counts.
That’s when you find out who you are.”
– Joss Whedon

“All worthy work is open to interpretations the author did not intend. Art is not a pet–it’s your kid. It grows up and it talks back to you.” – Joss Whedon

And finally – one of my favorites:

Question: Why do you write strong female characters?
Joss: Because you are still asking me that question.

  1. You forgot Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog that he did during the industry ‘strike’ to show what could be done with friends and let’s NOT forget his version of Much Ado About Nothing. Making him even THAT more awesome! And leave Hawkeye alone. Jeremy Renner shares my Jack’s birthday. LoL.

    1. Haha ok – not hating on Hawkeye, too much. ;). Good luck tomorrow. Hope it is so much fun!! Sorry we did not get to see OLLA tonight 😦 But I watched the PBS spot with Tom teaching Cookie Monster about delayed gratification, which helped. πŸ˜‰

      Get some rest. πŸ™‚

      1. Thanks you! Plus, funny thing about not getting to OLLA today, apparently it worked out in my favor because I was going to have to end up cancelling after all.
Also, Jeremy is older than me, not by much granted, but he’s still pretty cute and was pretty awesome in The Bourne Legacy.

    1. That is a great one. He has a lot of really great writing ideas too. There is a great list on Pinterest if you ever play around on Pinterest.

I need to get my K post done. Been cleaning. For what that is worth in my house of boys and dogs πŸ˜‰

    1. He has a whole lot of other great quotes if you play around on Pinterest you’ll see lots of his quotes and writing tips. Good stuff.

Thanks for the visit and the comment πŸ˜‰

  2. I’m surprised we don’t have a bust of Joss Whedon in our house. My kids and I are HUGE fans, even though I will never forgive him for Wash’s demise.

  3. I have the “Make” quote up on my Writing Inspiration board above my desk, because I’m of the mind that people (including me) consume wayyy too much, and don’t *create* things to balance it out. Some other fantastic quotes there, too! Long live the Whedon! πŸ™‚
